TV legend James Burrows dies at 85 — Creator behind Friends, Cheers and Frasier

Acclaimed American television director and producer James Burrows, best known for shaping some of the most iconic sitcoms in television history, including FRIENDS, has died at the age of 85.

Burrows' family confirmed his death to PEOPLE on Friday, June 19.

"We celebrate the extraordinary life and enduring legacy of James 'Jimmy' Burrows, who passed away peacefully today surrounded by his loving family," the family said in a statement.

"For more than five decades, Burrows was one of the most influential and beloved directors in television history. As a legendary director, mentor and creative force, he helped shape generations of comedy and brought immeasurable joy to audiences around the world," the statement added.

Over a career spanning more than 50 years, Burrows directed over 1,000 television episodes and played a pivotal role in creating some of the most celebrated sitcoms ever produced. His credits include The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Taxi, Cheers, Frasier, Friends, Will & Grace and The Big Bang Theory, among many others.

The cause of death has not been disclosed.

Born in Los Angeles in 1940, Burrows became one of the most decorated figures in television comedy. Throughout his illustrious career, he won 11 Emmy Awards and five Directors Guild of America Awards.

His work helped define modern television comedy, leaving behind a legacy that influenced generations of writers, actors and directors.

Meanwhile, David Schwimmer, who played a key character in Friends, wrote on Instagram: "Jimmy Burrows brought out the best in every actor he ever worked with, and elevated every show he directed, making it funnier and more moving than anyone expected."

He further said: "Jimmy, I miss you already and I’m forever grateful to you. Thank you for being such a wonderful director, mentor and friend."
