Mumbai/Kolkata/IBNS: Bollywood actor Rajkummar Rao will play former Indian cricket captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly in the latter's biopic.

Ganguly confirmed it to the media at an event in Burdwan on Thursday.

"As far as I know, Rajkummar Rao is going to play the role," said Ganguly.

"Actors sometimes have issues with dates so it depends on Rajkummar Rao now when he will be able to give time. But it will take more than a year to be released," added the former skipper.

The speculations over who would play Ganguly onscreen were going on for several years.

Earlier, multiple B-Town actors including Ranbir Kapoor and Ayushmann Khurrana were speculated to be playing the role.

Meanwhile, Ganguly on Thursday escaped an accident unhurt after his car was involved in a collision on Durgapur Expressway in West Bengal while he was on way to the event at Burdwan University.

As per reports, a lorry suddenly overtook Ganguly's Range Rover forcing the car driver to apply brakes.

The sudden application of brakes led to other cars of Ganguly's convoy to collide with each other with one of them hitting the Range Rover.

Ganguly was unhurt but two cars of his convoy suffered minor damages.
