Netflix removes suicide scene from 13 Reasons Why after controversy

Los Angeles, July 17 (IBNS): Netflix has removed the three-minute long suicide scene from 13 Reasons Why two years after it had stirred controversy, media reports said.

In the scene, which is no longer available on Netflix, actress Katherine Langford, who played the role of Hannah, was seen assessing her life in the mirror, then gets into a bathtub and takes a razor blade and pierces on the skin of her left wrist.

"We've heard from many young people that 13 Reasons Why encouraged them to start conversations about difficult issues like depression and suicide and get help — often for the first time," Netflix's statement has been quoted by The Hollywood Reporter.

"As we prepare to launch season three later this summer, we've been mindful about the ongoing debate around the show. So on the advice of medical experts, including Dr. Christine Moutier, chief medical officer at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, we've decided with creator Brian Yorkey and the producers to edit the scene in which Hannah takes her own life from season one."

The scene had shown details of how the actress was committing suicide onscreen.

After the edit, now the audience can see Hannah looking at the mirror and then cutting into the scene of her parents' reaction to the suicide.
