Nation bids tearful goodbye: Asha Bhosle cremated with full state honours in Mumbai

India bid an emotional farewell to legendary singer Asha Bhosle, who was cremated in Mumbai on Monday with full state honours.

The hearse carrying her mortal remains travelled from her Lower Parel residence to Shivaji Park crematorium, adorned with white and yellow flowers and a large portrait of the singer wearing a traditional Maharashtrian ‘nath’.

Thousands of fans lined the streets, paying their last respects as the cortege passed.

The cremation took place at 4 pm in the presence of close family members, including her son Anand Bhosle and siblings Usha Mangeshkar and Hridaynath Mangeshkar.

Singers Anup Jalota and Shaan offered musical tributes, while actor Aamir Khan was among those seen arriving at the crematorium.

State honours and ceremonial tribute

The iconic singer was accorded full state honours. Her body, brought from Breach Candy Hospital, was placed in a glass casket draped in the Indian tricolour. A ceremonial police salute marked the nation’s tribute to one of its greatest musical legends.

Earlier, fans and admirers were allowed a final public viewing at her residence.

Celebrities pay their respects

Several prominent figures from across cinema, music, and sports gathered to honour her legacy. Among them were Sachin Tendulkar and Anjali Tendulkar.

Music maestro AR Rahman, along with actors Jackie Shroff, Riteish Deshmukh, Renuka Shahane, Ranveer Singh, and filmmaker Rakesh Roshan were present. Veteran stars Helen, Poonam Dhillon, and Meenakshi Sheshadri also attended.

A legacy that defined generations

Born to Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle began her career at a young age, making her debut in 1943.

Over an illustrious career spanning more than eight decades, she delivered timeless hits across genres. Her collaborations with RD Burman remain iconic.

From Piya Tu Ab To Aaja and Dum Maro Dum to Dil Cheez Kya Hai and Chura Liya Hai Tumne, her voice became the soundtrack of generations.

A recipient of two National Film Awards, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2000), and the Padma Vibhushan (2008), her legacy remains unmatched in Indian music.
