Bengali film director Anik Dutta died on Wednesday after falling from the roof of his residence located in Gariahat area in south Kolkata, media reports said.

According to reports, he was rushed to a private hospital in south Kolkata where he died.

It is still not clear what led to his fall from the roof of the house.

Anik Dutta had largely stayed away from the public eye in recent months amid reports of prolonged ill health, making his sudden and mysterious death all the more shocking for the Bengali film fraternity.

Those close to the industry had noticed that the director, known for films like Bhooter Bhabishyat and Aparajito, was appearing less frequently at public events and promotions.

During the release phase of his latest film Joto Kando Kolkatatei, there were also reports of breathing difficulties and health concerns, including an incident at a special screening where he reportedly needed rest and medical support before rejoining the event later.

Who is Anik Dutta?

Anik Dutta is the grandson of Narendra Chandra Dutta, the founder of United Bank of India.

He made his directorial debut in 2012 with Bhooter Bhabishyat, a film that earned both critical and Box Office success.

The film had drawn attention for its political and social satire presented through the horror narrative.

The film was later remade in Bollywood with the title Gang of Ghosts.

After the success of the comedy, Dutta went on to direct several other movies like Aschorjo Prodip,  Aparajito  and Bhobishyoter Bhoot.

His last directed movie Joto Kando Kolkatatei hit the silverscreen in 2025 during Durga Puja celebration.
