Hikers in the US have found human remains close to an area where actor Julian Sands disappeared.

Identification should be completed next week, the San Bernardino County sheriff's department in south California said on Saturday, reported BBC.

The British actor, 54, disappeared while he was hiking in the San Gabriel Mountains.

"Civilian hikers contacted the Fontana Sheriff's Station after they discovered human remains in the Mt Baldy wilderness," the sheriff's department said as quoted by BBC.

He is known for his roles in films such as The Killing Fields, A Room with a View, Warlock, Arachnophobia, Boxing Helena, and Leaving Las Vegas.

On television, he portrayed Vladimir Bierko in 24, Jor-El in Smallville, and Yulish Rabitov in Banshee.
