Kolkata, Nov 14 (IBNS): UNICEF on Friday announced its partnership with Groupon, a daily deals site, to raise funds for promoting quality education for children in India.

UNICEF India Celebrity Advocate, Kareena Kapoor Khan has also lent her support to this initiative.

It is four years since the Right to Free & Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, that ensures free and compulsory education for children in the age group 6-14 years, was enacted by the Government of India. Over the years, there has been a felt need to expand the focus beyond quantity and accelerate the shift from ‘Right of Access to Education’ to ‘Right to Learn and quality education’.

Through this partnership Groupon will reach out to its customers in India to donate an amount between Rs. 499 to Rs. 799.  For every donation made on the site, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Bollywood actress and UNICEF Celebrity Advocate for Education, will give an equivalent amount, thereby doubling the donation.

Launching the partnership, Ankur Warikoo, CEO Groupon India said, “This simple act of donating a small amount can have far reaching impact on the lives of millions of children. I am excited that through this partnership we can demonstrate our commitment towards causes affecting children. This campaign is the first of our efforts. We are committed to working with UNICEF for creating similar fundraising campaigns as a long-term partner.”

Speaking about the initiative, UNICEF celebrity advocate, Kareena Kapoor Khan shared, “UNICEF & Groupon India have taken a step towards a cause which is extremely close to my heart. I am delighted to be a part of this campaign and would encourage everyone to contribute and help us improve lives. I truly hope that we together can make a difference and build a better future for children of our country.”

“This partnership is an enabler as it leverages the outreach of Groupon, and generates support for quality education and inclusive learning. It is an opportunity to reach out to the company’s large customer base - mostly middle class people - who want to contribute to  creating a joyful and conducive school environment for children,” said Louis Georges Arsenault, Representative, UNICEF India.
