Greta Gerwig’s Barbie continues to rock global BO, enters record $1 billion club

Director Greta Gerwig’s pink-coated fantasy comedy Barbie, which was released 17 days ago, has added yet another feather to its crown as it has surpassed $1 billion at the global box office.

The box office collection includes $459 million in North America and $572 million internationally.

Gerwig is now the first-ever solo female filmmaker who has entered the billion-dollar club.

Three other billion-dollar blockbusters were co-directed by women, including “Frozen” ($1.3 billion) and “Frozen 2” ($1.45 billion) both co-directed by Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, as well as “Captain Marvel” ($1.1 billion), co-directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, reports Variety.

The movie has become the fastest Warner Bros. release to be a part of the  $1 billion club.

Previously, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” had entered the club in 19 days.

Based on the Barbie fashion dolls by Mattel, it is the first live-action Barbie film after numerous computer-animated direct-to-video and streaming television films.

The film follows Barbie (Margot Robbie) and Ken (Ryan Gosling) on a journey of self-discovery following an existential crisis.

The movie hit the silverscreen on July 21.

Interestingly, its simultaneous release with Universal's Oppenheimer led to the "Barbenheimer" phenomenon on social media, which encouraged audiences to see both films as a double feature.
