CBFC denies certification to Lipstick Under My Burkha, makers to challenge in tribunal

Mumbai, Feb 23 (IBNS) Filmmaker Alankrita Shrivastava's critically acclaimed movie Lipstick Under My Burkha, which explores fantasies of some women in a small town, has been denied certification by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

The film has been reportedly denied certification for being a "lady-oriented" film as the upset filmmaker said she is facing the mindset of the patriarchy which she has challenged.

The makers would approach the Revising Committee and the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT) for the film's release.

"The story is lady oriented, their fantasy above life. There are contentious sexual scenes, abusive words, audio pornography and a bit sensitive touch about one particular section of society, hence film refused under guidelines 1(a), 2(vii), 2(ix), 2(x), 2(xi), 2(xii) and 3(i)." the CBFC said.

The film under the genre of Drama/Comedy is from Prakash Jha Productions and it revolves around four feisty women in small-town India try to chase their little dreams and desires through secret acts of rebellion.

Trapped in their own worlds, four women claim their desires through secret acts of rebellion.

Producer Prakash Jha told Mumbai Mirror, "As a country we must encourage freedom of expression but the CBFC refusing to certify films that tell uncomfortable stories discourages filmmakers from pushing the envelope."

Starring Ratna Pathak-Shah, Konkona Sensharma, Aahana Kumra, Plabita Borthakur, Vikrant Massey, Shashank Arora the film has won many awards.
