#boycottchhapaak trends on Twitter as Deepika Padukone stands beside JNU students, many praise actress too

New Delhi/Mumbai/IBNS: Top Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone's surprise visit to the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus sharing solidarity with the Left students, who were among those assaulted on last Sunday by masked men, has earned her both praises and also criticisms with many giving a call to boycott her upcoming Hindi film Chhapaak.

#boycottchhapaak has trended on Twitter throughout the day as several Twitterati have even called Padukone's visit to the JNU on Tuesday night is nothing but a "promotional" activity for Chhapaak which is due to release this Friday.

Several people took to Twitter to show that they have cancelled their booked movie tickets taking a complete antagonistic stance against the actress who is one of the senior as well as largely popular Bollywood faces.

Many questioned her decision to be with the Left students while there were also victims from the right-wing student group like ABVP who are also admitted in hospital.

Calling her anti-national, Vishal Suthar said on Twitter, "Congratulations @deepikapadukone praised by Pakistan army...itself proof that you’re in support of anti nationalist."

In a whataboutery, one user said, "Hello @Deepikapadukone this also happened in JNU then where were you ?"

Comparing the actress with the Pakistan Army, one Sayli Kulkarni tweeted, "I don't find any difference in Pakistany army and Indian intellectuals."

Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri also slammed Deepika Padukone for her solidarity with the Left students. In an interview he questioned if she were a mother  would she send her child ever to JNU and stand with Kanhaiya Kumar.

If we look through another prism, Padukone, 34, is hailed for "her guts to stand with the JNU students" becoming one of the handful Bollywood celebrities to protest against the assault on those who were protesting against the fee-hike.

With #IStandWithDeepika and #ISupportDeepika, Akash Jagtap tweeted, "Beauty is what beauty does. @deepikapadukone shows us what real heroes are all about."

Sariya Jat said, "Beauty with brain.... Beautiful lady with beautiful golden heart luv u dipika hats off to u"

One Manjish Tanwar tweeted, "If u r a star,if u r a politician,if u r a businessman or u r a common man but first of all these u r an Indian nd it’s ur duty to take stand against the wron erroneous activities."

Visiting the protest site, Padukone, dressed in a black bottleneck dress, stood silently, went towards the injured Students' Union president Aishe Ghosh and greeted her with folded hands.

She also stood beside former JNU Students' Union president and Communist Party of India (CPI) leader Kanhaiya Kumar who was charged for allegedly giving "anti-national slogans" in the same campus during a protest few years ago.

Padukone has turned a producer with Chhapaak which is based on the life of acid-attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal who has been portrayed by the actress in the film.

This is not the first time Padukone is facing the public ire and call for boycott of her film. Earlier in 2017, she was threatened of getting her nose chopped for portraying Rani Padmini in bad light in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmaavat (earlier known as Padmavati).

Several Hindu fringe groups had also gave calls to boycott her film.
