Kolkata/UNI: Veteran thespian Soumitra Chattopadhyay, who is suffering from Covid Encephalopathy, has no need of oxygen support though he continues to be in intensive care, his actress daughter Poulami Bose said today.

In a facebook post, the theatre personality said, 'As per the team of 12 doctors attending to him, my father is maintaining his vital parameters and is stable on this count. His bp is normal and he has no need of oxygen administration at the moment.'

'However, he is suffering from Covid Encephalopathy as per the physicians assessment and therefore disoriented and restless at this time,' she said.

'All due care is being taken on this count. There has been no detoriation on account of his comorbidities, including a high PSA count, pneumonia tendencies and compromised lungs which is a good sign,' Bose said and thanked all the well-wishers.

Chatterjee's wife, son and daughter have tested negative.

Chattopadhyay (85), who won the Dadasaheb Phalke award in 2011, was at an “acute confusional stage” and shifted to the ITU last evening.

Chattopadhyay had an enduring contribution to Satyajit Ray's oeuvre, acting in 14 of the maestro's films.

He began his film career with Ray's masterpiece 'Apur Sansar' which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in 1960 and the Sutherland Trophy in 1959.

Ray also cast him in his penultimate creation 'Ganashatru', based on Henrik Ibsen's play "Enemy Of The People".

Chattopadhyay in July had returned to the shooting floor with actor-filmmaker Parambrata Chattopadhyay's Abhijaan after months of anti-Covid-19 lockdown.
