Bappi Lahiri: Bollywood's disco pioneer dies at 69

Mumbai: Popular music composer and singer Bappi Lahiri, who was known for creating several hit foot-tapping Bollywood disco compositions and his fascination for gold, died at a Mumbai hospital on Wednesday. He was 69.

Apart from Bollywood, Bappi had also created some memorable compositions in the Bengali film industry.

Lahiri had been in hospital for a month and had been discharged on Monday.

But he was again admitted to the hospital on Tuesday after his health deteriorated.

Bappi Lahiri was suffering from multiple health issues.

"He died due to OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) shortly before midnight," doctors treating him told UNI.

Born as Alokesh Lahiri, he was popularly known as Bappi Lahiri and Bappi Da among his fans.

He had delivered major box office successes in Bengali films like Amar Sangee, Asha O Bhalobasha, Aamar Tumi, Amar Prem, Mandira, Badnam, Raktelekha, Priya and so on.

He was popular in the 1980s and 1990s with filmi soundtracks such as Wardat, Disco Dancer, Namak Halaal, Sharaabi, Dance Dance, Commando, Saaheb, Gang Leader, Sailaab.

Bappi Lahiri joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on Jan 31, 2014 to contest the 2014 Lok Sabha election.

He was made a BJP candidate from Srerampur (Lok Sabha constituency) in 2014, but lost to Kalyan Banerjee of All India Trinamool Congress.

Bappi died just days after singing legend Lata Mangeshkar passed away.

Reactions:

Indian PM Narendra Modi mourned the death of the music composer and tweeted: "Shri Bappi Lahiri Ji’s music was all encompassing, beautifully expressing diverse emotions. People across generations could relate to his works. His lively nature will be missed by everyone. Saddened by his demise. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti."

Singer Adnan Sami said: "He was India’s First ‘ROCK STAR’!! He was full of love & generosity! Will miss him dearly."

Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh said: "Sad news of the passing away of legendary musician #BappiLahiri ji 🙏🏻 he will be fondly remembered for his mesmerising musical compositions which are loved by people of all ages. My condolences to the family. RIP #BappiDa ॐ शान्ति."

Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar said: "Shocked to hear of the sad demise of Veteran Music director Bappida, was fortunate to have him sing a track in my film #InduSarkar, an  unsurmountable loss to his fans & the music industry. Heartfelt condolences to his family members. #OmShanti."
