New Delhi/UNI: President Ram Nath Kovind here on Sunday evening conferred Dadasaheb Phalke Award to veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan for his outstanding contribution to the Indian film industry.

Mr Kovind conferred the award to Mr Bachchan at Rashtrapati Bhawan here.

Speaking on the occasion, the 77-year-old actor on a lighter note expressed his gratitude on receiving the award saying that when he heard the announcement of this award, he had a little doubt in his mind that whether it was a signal for him to now sit and relax at home as he had done a lot of work.

There was some work still left for him to complete, the Indian cinema megastar said.

The award was instituted in the year 1969 and named after the person considered as the father of Indian cinema, Dhundiraj Govind Phalke.

It was conferred by the Government of India for outstanding contribution to Indian cinema and its growth and development.

The award includes a Swarn Kamal and a cash prize of Rs ten lakh.
