Youth from Ganga basin villages to spread awareness about clean Ganga

The project has been approved at an estimated cost of rupees ten crore, the ministry said.

The Namami Gange programme aims to clean up the country's lifeline, the Ganga river, and build awareness among people about preventing river pollution.

The river faces dangerous levels of pollution arising from domestic and industrial wastes being poured into it and plastic and garbage dumping.

The youth brigade volunteers trained by NYKS will be deployed in villages along the river basis to make people aware about the need to keep the river clean.

Village youth clubs will also be consulted for recruiting 50 young campaigners who will lead the volunteers, the ministry said.

Besides educating people about the adverse consequences of polluting Ganga, the volunteers will also be an asset in providing information on existing government activities like construction of toilets, water harvesting and conservation for creation of a comprehensive database in coordination with National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), the implementing arm of Namami Gange programme.

The project envisages deployment volunteers in 29 districts covering nearly 2,336 villages along the river in Ganga basin states of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal. One project officer will be assigned to each district.
