'You are a liar': Mamata Banerjee faces guests' ire over Singur, RG Kar, 'attack on Hindus' at London event

London/IBNS: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's address to the students at Kellogg College, Oxford University in London turned ugly as she was grilled by a section of the audience on industrialisation and the horrific rape-murder incident at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Mamata was on Thursday heckled by members of the UK branch of India's leftist students' wing, Students' Federation of India (SFI).

Claiming a massive industrialisation in West Bengal, Mamata said, "Everybody (is investing). If you ask me, nobody is left out. Only one sector is left out, that is the direct flight from Kolkata to London."

When the SFI students rolled out banners and held it high, protesting against Mamata's claims, she said, "Thank you so much. You are welcoming me. I will give you a sweet tooth."

The Chief Minister initially encouraged the students to "raise their voice" flagging democracy.

Upon being accused of driving out Tata which was in West Bengal to build a car factory during the Left Front regime, Mamata said it was not correct.

When she was asked about the RG Kar case, Mamata said, "The case is subjudice and also the central government has taken over. It is not with us. Please don't do politics here... You can do politics in my state but not here. You know about crowdfunding and all better than me."

In response, one of the students hit back at her saying, "This is because when we come and ask you questions in Kolkata, your ministers say 'we will break your finger'. This is what your ministers do in West Bengal."

"You are absolutely lying," Mamata countered and added, "Don't do it brother. I have a special affection for you. We love all of you."

The Chief Minister, who also heads the Trinamool Congress, then pulled out an old photograph featuring her in an injured state from the Left Front era.

Mamata alleged the Leftists had tried to kill her. "Nobody tried to kill you," a student immediately hit back at her.

As the confrontation escalated, Mamata said, "This is their habit. They can't change their habits."

One of the elderly man told the CM, "You killed Abhaya (RG Kar rape-murder victim). Any work for Hindus?"

When the Chief Minister attempted to highlight her secular image, one of the students said, "You are a liar."

Another protester questioned the Chief Minister, "How many Hindus were killed?"

The protesters had also raised posters slamming former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly, who was accompanying the Chief Minister on her tour.

"Sourav, where is the 1 rupee only for 300 acres? Is the steel plant coming?," read a poster referring to Ganguly's bid to build a steel plant in West Bengal's Garbeta.

The SFI UK has claimed responsibility behind the protest against Mamata Banerjee's address, which had boosted up the TMC back home in Kolkata.

In a Facebook post, the SFI UK said it protested against Mamata's 'blatant lies'.

The organisation wrote on the social media platform, "Students’ Federation of India - United Kingdom held a demonstration in Kellogg College, Oxford University against Mamata Banerjee's speech. We openly opposed her blatant lies by asking her to provide evidence of the social development she claims to have pioneered in the West Bengal. Instead of allowing us to peacefully express our opinions, the police were called."

"... In support of the students and working masses of West Bengal, SFI-UK raised its voice in opposition to Mamata Banerjee and the TMC's corrupt, undemocratic rule."

Reacting to the scene that broke out at the Kellogg College, the TMC has put up an official post on X reading, " She doesn’t flinch. She doesn’t falter. The more you heckle, the fiercer she roars. Smt. @MamataOfficial is a Royal Bengal Tiger!"

Sharing the video of the confrontation on X, Bharatiya Janata Party  (BJP) IT Cell head Amit Malviya said, "Bengali Hindus confront West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at Kellogg College in London, raising angry slogans calling her out for the rape and murder of the lady doctor at RG Kar, crimes against women in Sandeshkhali, the genocide of Hindus, and widespread corruption…"
