Will do whatever we can, says Iran on Indian-origin nurse Nimisha Priya facing death sentence in Yemen

Iran said it will do whatever it can for the Indian-origin nurse Nimisha Priya who is facing a death sentence in Yemen.

Nimisha Priya, who hails from Kerala, was found guilty of murdering a Yemeni national in 2017.

"We will take up this issue regarding this nurse. We will do whatever we can,” a senior Iranian official told The Hindu.

She is currently lodged at a prison in the Yemeni capital Sanaa.

The capital city is currently under the control of Iran-backed Houthis.

Reacting to the death sentence, India's MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiwal earlier said, "We are aware of the sentencing of Ms. Nimisha Priya in Yemen. We understand that the family of Ms. Priya is exploring relevant options."

"The government is extending all possible help in the matter," he said.

MEA has responded after Yemen president Rashad al-Alimi approved the death sentence for Indian nurse Nimisha Priya.

The Indian-origin nurse's family has been fighting for her release since then and approached Yemen's Supreme Court against the trial court order.

The Yemeni Supreme Court had rejected the appeal in 2023.

Nimisha's mother Prema Kumari reached Yemen earlier this year and has been staying in the capital city of Sanaa's trying to explore options to waive her daughter's death sentence.

Her husband is expecting a 'last-minute' pardon can save her.

"We continue to pray," he said.

"We are told the death sentence will be executed within a month of the president's sanction," he said.

He said life without her remained unimaginable for the family.
