Will appeal against extradition to India order: Vijay Mallya

New Delhi, Feb 4 (IBNS): Fugitive liquor baron Vijay Mallya has said he will appeal against the order of his extradition to India.

"After the decision was handed down on December 10,2018 by the Westminster Magistrates Court, I stated my intention to appeal. I could not initiate the appeal process before a decision by the Home Secretary. Now I will initiate the appeal process," Mallya tweeted.

UK's Secretary of State on Monday signed the order for his extradition to India to face trial for defaulting of loans and money syphoning.

Mallya now has 14 days to appeal in a higher court against his extradition.

Mallya, owner of the now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines who now lives in the UK, fled India in March 2016.

He owes around Rs. 9,000 crore to banks and faces trial on different counts ranging from defaulting of loans and money syphoning.

Reacting soon after the news broke, Union Minister Arun Jaitley tweeted: "Modi Government clears one more step to get Mallya extradited while Opposition rallies around the Saradha Scamsters."
