Why do you hate farmers? Arvind Kejriwal to PM Modi over Lakhimpur incident

New Delhi/IBNS: Mounting pressure on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) both at Centre and Uttar Pradesh, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Wednesday joined the list of opposition politicians who lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his outfit over the Lakhimpur incident, where eight people including four farmers were killed.

"For the last one year, farmers have been camped at borders (Delhi border) with their demands. More than 600 farmers have lost their lives there (while protesting). And now cars are run over them, leading to their deaths! Why do you hate farmers so much? What harm did they do to you?" Kejriwal, who heads powerful regional satrap Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), questioned.

Eight people including four farmers died during a violence which broke out in Tikunia village between the agitators and individuals belonging to the convoy of Union Minister Ajay Mishra's son Ashish Mishra.

A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against Ashish in connection with the incident.

No arrest has yet been made in connection with the incident.

"PM Modi, why are the accused who ran over farmers at Lakhimpur, being shielded from punishment? The entire system is trying to protect the murderers," the AAP supremo said.

"A car came and crushed the farmers! We used to watch these scenes in Hindi films," Kejriwal added.

Besides slamming the government for not allowing opposition leaders to visit Lakhimpur, Kejriwal urged the Prime Minister to sack Ajay Mishra and meet the families of the deceased.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has been kept in detention since Sunday night when she attempted to visit Lakhimpur.

While Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel was stopped at Lucknow airport Tuesday, a three-member Congress team, led by Lok Sabha MP Rahul Gandhi, is on their way to Lakhimpur though permission has been denied.

Interestingly, a five-member delegation of the BJP's arch-rival Trinamool Congress (TMC) were allowed to meet the families of the deceased in Lakhimpur Wednesday.

The latest incident is going to have political ramifications in Uttar Pradesh, which will head to assembly polls in a few months' time, with the BJP seeking the second consecutive term under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in the backdrop of the alleged COVID-19 mismanagement.
