West Bengal: Tension erupts in Dinhata after BJP leader's hanging dead body recovered

Cooch Behar/IBNS: A clash reportedly broke out between police and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers on Wednesday in Dinhata in Cooch Behar district of poll bound West Bengal after a local BJP leader's hanging body was recovered.

According to reports, locals in the morning found the body of BJP's Dinhata Town Mondal president, Amit Sarkar, hanging in the balcony of Dinhata Animal Hospital.

Alleging that the leader was murdered and then hanged by Trinamool Congress (TMC) men, BJP workers staged agitation, blocked roads and reportedly vandalized a local TMC party office.

When a heavy police force along with Rapid Action Force (RAF) reached the scene and tried to lift the blockade, protesting BJP workers clashed with them.

The mob reportedly pelted stones aiming at the cops and obstructed them from taking the body for post-mortem.

Later, police returned to lathicharge and lobbed tear gas shells to disperse the crowd and bring the situation under control.

Meanwhile, local TMC leadership denied their partymen's involvement in the matter and claimed that the BJP leader had committed suicide.

Local police have initiated a probe and sent the body for autopsy.
