Kolkata, Apr 12 (IBNS): The Panchayat polls process in West Bengal has been stalled until Monday, April 16, following the Calcutta High Court's directive on Thursday, according to media reports.

The Calcutta High Court has asked the West Bengal Election Commission for a status report on the process, reports said.

The Court also pulled up the BJP for approaching multiple forums on the issue, according to NDTV.

TMC has said that it will move a division bench of the High Court, reports said.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked Bharatiya Janata Party and CPI-M to approach the Calcutta High Court to seek an extension of nomination filing deadline for the panchayat polls in West Bengal, scheduled to be held in May, media reports said.

The top court asked the two opposition parties in the state to approach the High Court in this matter on Thursday.

Monday was the last day for filing nominations.

The BJP moved the top court on Tuesday after the state election commission rescinded its own decision of extending the deadline for filing nominations till 3 pm on Tuesday.

The BJP and the ruling TMC have been at loggerheads, ever since the state election commission announced the poll dates.

The polls will take place on May 1, 3 and 5. Results will be declared on May 8.
