West Bengal: Man murders his sister in suspected 'honour killing'

Kolkata/Hooghly, Feb 14 (IBNS): A young woman was shot dead allegedly by her brother in a suspected honour killing in the wee hours of Tuesday at Sri Krishna Nagar area under Serampore Police Station limits in West Bengal's Hooghly district, barely 30 km from Kolkata, local media reports said.

According to reports, nearly 26-year-old Nitu Singh was found dead inside her bedroom in the early morning, shortly after her family members heard a gunshot sound.

Locals claimed that Nitu Singh's younger brother Amit Singh, who becomes untraceable since the incident took place, shot his sister to death on valentine's day as he could not accept Nitu's relationship with a man next door.

However, police have started probe into the matter.

"We are quizzing Nitu Singh's family members and have launched search operation to catch main accused in the case, Amit Singh," a senior official of Hooghly district police told IBNS.

"Investigation in the case is currently at a preliminary stage and we can't confirm right now whether it's an incident of 'honour killing' or an outcome of a property dispute," the official added.
