West Bengal expects to build its third port in East Midnapore
Kolkata, Jun 18 (IBNS): Government of West Bengal has identified an area between Shankarpur and Tajpur in East Midnapore to build a new port with private participation, the media reported on Saturday.
The minor deep sea port will be built at an estimated cost of Rs 4,231 crore, media reported quoting the state's Finance Minister Amit Mitra.
According to Mitra, no land acquisition will be necessary for the project as land will be reclaimed by desilting the sea. The project will also not hamper tourism in the area (as both destinations are popular tourist attractions) as the 3 km stretch has a guard wall along the coast. There will be cargo storage berths for general (commodities), iron ore, coal and limestone. The port is said to have a 12-metre draught that will enable ships with a maximum of 60,000 tonnes of cargo to come here.
Following cabinet sanctions, the government will start the tender process to choose a private player for the development of the new port.
One of the key problems faced by the two other ports in West Bengal, at Kolkata and Haldia, both located on the Hooghly river, is silting.
The Trinamool government scrapped a port project in Rasulpur (also in East Midnapore) that was mooted by the earlier Left Front government citing irregularities, media reported.
