West Bengal: Bidhannagar Mayor Sabyasachi Dutta resigns

Kolkata, July 18 (IBNS): Amid the Calcutta High Court's hearing on his plea against the no-confidence motion, Bidhannagar Mayor Sabyasachi Dutta resigned on Thursday.

Dutta's move came amid his strenuous relationship with his party Trinamool Congress.

On behalf of Dutta, lawyer and former Kolkata mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya had filed the plea stating the Trinamool government had violated the municipal rules by moving a no-confidence motion arbitrarily.

The no-confidence was likely to be taken up on Friday.

The resignation has further fuelled the speculation of Dutta's joining in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is eyeing to capture power in the Assembly Elections of 2021.

Earlier, Dutta was seen having a meal with former Trinamool strongman and BJP leader Mukul Roy. Dutta and Roy have been seen together on several occasions of late.
