West Bengal Assembly passes bill for changing the state's name to Bangla

Kolkata, July 26 (IBNS): The West Bengal Assembly on Wednesday passed a bill to change the state’s name from West Bengal to ‘Bangla.'

The resolution will now go to the Union Home Ministry for its assent.

Once approved by the Home Ministry, West Bengal will officially be known as 'Bangla'.

Last year, the West Bengal cabinet had cleared the proposal to change the state's name to Bangla.

Following a suggestion put forward by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the state Assembly had passed a resolution on August 29, 2016, changing the name of West Bengal to Bengal in English, Bangla in Bengali and Bengal in Hindi.

However, the Centre rejected the proposal.
