Kolkata, May 24 (IBNS): The BJP sounded its war cry in Bengal saying it will beat Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress to form the government in the state. The BJP has this time won an unprecedented 18 seats of the 42 Lok Sabha seats from the state.

Speaking to reporters after his narrow win from Barrackpore against TMC's Dinesh Trivedi, BJP's Arjun Singh said: "We got this mandate as signal to finish the Mamata Banerjee government."

"I feel sad for Mamata Banerjee," he said.

"Mamata Banerjee did not understand the emotions of the people of Bengal and she tortured people. That resulted in the BJP winning 18 seats," he said.

"In the coming days, this (state) government will not stay," he added.

BJP state president Dilip Ghosh, at a news conference, said: "It's definitely a surprise (for naysayers). Who knew the BJP would win 40 per cent votes in Bengal?"

The Trinamool has been reduced to 22 Lok Sabha seats in Bengal this time from 34 in 2014.

Dilip Ghosh shared a cartoon on Twitter showing Mamata being tossed off an EVM and wrote in Bengali: "Halved in '19, cleared in '21."

Hooghly's newly-elected BJP MP Locket Chatterjee said: "This is the result of the untiring efforts of the BJP workers over the past few months."

Mamata on Friday shared a poem in English, Bengal and Hindi on Twitter that talks about religious intolerance and evidently a reference to the BJP that seeks to sell "aggression in religion".
