WB: Cop killed by gamblers in Cooch Behar

Kolkata/Cooch Behar, Nov 10 (IBNS): A policeman was killed in a clash with gamblers at Four Number Bazar area under Kotwali Police Station in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal on Tuesday, reports said.

According to reports, a team of 11 policemen from Kotwali Police Station on Tuesday evening raided that area where few gamble-camps were being allegedly run.

Gamblers suddenly started counter attack and policeman were beaten badly by them.

Few police personnel including one Sub Inspector (SI) of Kotwali Police Station, Ranjit Pal, were injured during the clash and rushed to MJN Hospital nearby. He  died in the hospital.

Few other injured policemen are being treated in the hospital.

Meanwhile, Cooch Behar SP Rajesh Yadav told IBNS: "When policemen were moving towards a gambling-camp, gamblers threw stones aiming at them. One police constable was hit by stone. The rear windshield of a police vehicle was also broken by stones hit by them. No injury mark was found on Ranjit Pal's body. He probably died of heart attack."

"After getting his post mortem report, the actual reason behind his death will be known. We have started investigation into the matter," Rajesh Yadav added.

However, a heavy police force have been deployed to the spot and senior officials of Cooch Behar district police have reached the hospital.

Police have started a search operation to catch the accused in connection with the case.

Few people have been reportedly detained.
