Wall collapses in Mumbai's Malad, 10-year old girl trapped in debris

Mumbai, July 2 (IBNS): A 10-year-old girl is trapped in debris after a wall collapsed in Mumbai's Malad due to heavy rain late last night, media reports said.

The incident occurred at around 2 am on Tuesday.

Massive rescue efforts had started after a faint voice of the girl was heard coming out from the debris asking for water. However, Mumbai Fire Brigade-led rescue teams were unable to take the girl out of debris due to poor weather, uneven and muddy ground.

The rescuers are instead trying to cut a small part of the wall to help the girl to come out.

Eighteen people have been killed and four others were critically injured due to the collapse of the wall. The injured were taken to trauma centres in Jogeshwari and Kandivali.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis along with state minister Yogesh Sagar had personally visited the injured people.

Fadnavis also announced a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh for the kin of the deceased. The Chief Minister tweeted, "Pained to know about the loss of lives in Malad Wall Collapse incidence. My thoughts are with families who lost loved ones & prayers for speedy recovery of injured. ₹5 lakh will be given to the kin of deceased."

In another incident, a school wall crashed upon its adjacent houses in Kalyan area leading to the death of three including a three-year-old boy. An injured girl is undergoing treatment at a hospital.

Sixteen deaths have so far been reported due to the heavy rain in Mumbai. The state government on Tuesday declared a public holiday for schools, colleges and offices in Mumbai city.
