Vegetable prices soar in Mumbai following traders' strike
Mumbai, Jul 13 (IBNS): Prices of vegetables and fruits have shot up in Mumbai and its neighbouring regions owing to an indefinite strike by the Agriculture Produce Market committees (APMCs), who are protesting a recent state government ordinance that has brought a change in the existing APMC Act and removed vegetables and fruits from the scope of the APMCs, the media reported on Wednesday.
Prior to the issuance of the ordinance, farmers who wanted to sell their products in the APMC markets had to sell the products to sell the to designated traders who were issued licenses by the APMCs. Besides, the farmers had to pay APMC cess, taxes, and commissions.
After the ordinance, farmers can sell their products directly to consumers or to retailers.
While the spiraling prices are a concern for the general public, the issue is turning out to be a political battle between the ruling BJP and the erstwhile ruling party, the Congress-NCPas the latter controls most of APMCs in the state, the media reported.
