UPA to name new Army chief today?

| | May 13, 2014, at 07:22 pm
New Delhi, May 13 (IBNS) The Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) is likely to announce the name of the new Army chief on Tuesday, said reports.

According to reports, Vice Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Dalbir Singh Suhag might be the next Army chief as recommended by the Ministry of Defence.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday allowed the UPA government to initiate the process of appointing the next Army chief.

The EC in a communication sent to the Defence Ministry stated that the model code of conduct does not extend to matters relating to the armed forces, reports said.

However, the final decision on the appointment rests with the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by the Prime Minister.

The present government had earlier proposed the name of Vice Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Dalbir Singh Suhag for the top post.

But the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had opposed to Lieutenant General Suhag's appointment saying the new government should choose the next chief.

Army Chief Gen Bikram Singh will retire on July 31 and as per the tradition, the successor is appointed two months ahead of that.
