Udta Punjab: Kejriwal attacks BJP following Bombay HC's verdict

New Delhi, Jun 13 (IBNS): Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday launched a salvo at the BJP, post the Bombay High Court's decision of allowing Udta Punjab, the controversial film, to release with only one cut as opposed to the 81 cuts proposed by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) earlier.

Kejriwal, who supported the release of the film, dealing with drug abuse in Punjab, tweeted, "Udta punjab judgement is a tight slap on Modi regime's intolerance."

The film, after weeks of tug-of-war between the makers and the Censor Board, finally received a green signal for its release from the Bombay High Court.

The court said there can be one cut which involved a scene of urination.

The court earlier observed that they don’t find anything in script that questions the sovereignty or integrity of India, reports said.

In its on-point observation, the court said that the film only depicts menace of drugs in Punjab and the setting, pattern and the theme of it are the prerogative of the makers.

The HC also told the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) that there was no justification for asking deletion of signposts in the film as there is nothing objectionable in the script that tends to malign the state of Punjab.

“There is no mention of the word 'censor' in board. Board should use its powers as per Constitution and SC's directions.”

“Suggest cuts, don't censor. CBFC is not empowered to censor,” the court said.

The CBFC on Sunday, cleared the film with an 'A' certificate and 13 cuts.

Under the banner of Indian Film and Television Directors' Association, the Bollywood film industry had united  to back the film Udta Punjab  co-produced by Anurag Kashyap.

CBFC chief Pahlaj Nihalani became the target of everyone's anger as they demanded his immediate removal.

Udta Punjab is a crime thriller film co-written and directed by Abhishek Chaubey based on drugs. Produced by Shobha Kapoor and Ekta Kapoor under their banner Balaji Motion Pictures in association with Phantom Films, it features Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Diljit Dosanjh in the lead roles.
