Guwahati, Dec 16 (IBNS) :  At least two suspected militants belonging to the banned NDFB-S were killed during a fierce gun fight as security forces rescued an abducted businessman from a place along the Meghalaya border  in Assam's Dima Hasao  on Friday night.

The encounter took place during an operation launched by security personnel in  the remote border area of Garampani to rescue a businessman, officials said on Saturday.

According to the reports, based on intelligence inputs, troops of Assam Rifles, Dima Hasao police and Meghalaya police  jointly launched the operation in the Garampani area of the hills district to rescue the businessman, Mahendra Rai.

When the troops reached the area, militants  fired and bullets were exchanged from both sides.

During the gun battle two militants were killed on the spot while two others  managed to escape taking advantage of darkness.

Later security personnel  safely rescued the abducted businessman, who hails from Meghalaya.

The forces also recovered a 9mm pistol and several rounds ammunition from the encounter place.

A top police official said Mahendra Rai was abducted by the suspected NDFB-S militants from East Jaintia Hills on December 4. A ransom of Rs. 2 crore was demanded from his family.

The slain militants are yet to be identified.
