Agra/IBNS/UNI: Two general coaches of the Patalkot Express train running between Firozpur in Punjab and Seoni in Madhya Pradesh caught fire in Malpura area of Agra district in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday leaving two people injured, a police officer said here.

"Five fire tenders were deployed to douse the fire and all the passengers were rescued safely. Two persons sustained injuries and have been admitted to the hospital. An inquiry is being conducted into the cause of fire," Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Sonam Kumar said.

Police sources said that the incident took place near Bandai railway station when the two coaches of the express train caught fire on the Agra-Jhansi section.

"The train reached Agra Cantt station in the afternoon from where it left for Jhansi. It is being said that after crossing Bandai railway station an explosion took place in one of the general coaches," sources said.

They said that this led to panic among the passengers and they jumped out of the coaches in a bid to save lives.

"The driver applied emergency brakes and informed the control room about the fire. Railway officers along with fire tenders reached the spot and controlled the fire," sources said.

The incident disrupted train traffic on the Agra-Jhansi section and several trains, including Vande Bharat, Durg, and Hamsafar, were stopped at Agra railway station.
