Phnom Penh, May 22 (Xinhua/UNI) Two Chinese tourists had died in a car crash in northwestern Cambodia's Banteay Meanchey province, a local traffic police chief said on Wednesday.

The victims were identified as a 28-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman, said Suth Hour, chief of O'chrov district traffic police office, adding that the man was from the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and the woman from Guangdong province.

The fatal accident took place on National Road No. 5 in O'chrov district on Tuesday at 5:10 p.m. local time when the speedy taxi carrying the two Chinese overtook a car and accidentally collided with a truck, he said.

"The two Chinese passengers were killed instantly during the crash and the taxi's driver, who was a Cambodian, died on the way to hospital," Hour told Xinhua via telephone.

He said the two Chinese took the taxi from the Siem Reap International Airport in northwestern Siem Reap province to Poipet town in Banteay Meanchey province when they met the accident.

Death toll from road traffic accidents remains high in Cambodia. In 2018, a total of 1,761 people were killed, as 4,771 others were injured in road crashes across the country, according to a government report.
