'Trying to find out reason for ceasefire violation by Pakistan along the IB in Jammu': BSF DG

Srinagar/UNI: Director General of the Border Security Force (BSF) Nitin Agrawal on Thursday said 'they were trying to find out the reason for the ceasefire violation by the Pakistani troops along the international border in Jammu region' in the last two weeks.

He said that in the last two weeks, Pakistan troops have resorted to unprovoked firing on our posts in Jammu division and our forces effectively retaliated causing extensive damage to them.

"They fired at our posts two to three times in the Jammu sector. …They have tried to target our soldiers, but our soldiers have always been alert and given a befitting response," Agrawal told reporters after a passing out parade and attestation ceremony where 599 recruits were inducted into the BSF at Humhama in Budgam district.

"We have heard that the other side has faced a lot of damage, although it's not verified yet…. It has been happening for the last two weeks, and we are trying to find out the reason for these firing incidents. And once we find it, we will plan the future strategy," he added.

While there are reports that a BSF jawan was killed in Pakistani Rangers firing along the international border in the Ramgarh sector of Jammu today, the DG said one of the jawans of the force was injured in the firing who is being treated.

When asked if the situation along the border will escalate due to fresh incidents of ceasefire violation, the DG BSF said it is difficult to tell anything at this point.

"It is difficult to tell if this will escalate or not. It is they (Pakistan) who start it and we respond appropriately," Agrawal said.

The BSF DG said that there are least chances of infiltration during the ceasefire violations along the international border.

He said that security forces are geared up to thwart any infiltration attempts on the border ahead of the winter season.

"There are always attempts before the winter to send maximum terrorists from across the border. During this period, there are always attempts to push more terrorists and that is the same this year.

"We are alert," Agarwal said.

"Our soldiers are vigilant and I have been to the LoC yesterday, met with the soldiers and officers there. Any attempt of infiltration from across the border would be dealt with strictly," he added.
