Nandigram clash

Trinamool files complaint before EC over 'gruesome attacks on workers by BJP' in Nandigram

Kolkata/IBNS: Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress on Thursday filed a complaint to the Election Commission citing "gruesome" attacks on its party workers in poll-bound West Bengal's Nandigram in the last 24 hours by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists.

In its complaint, the TMC said: "In the last 24 hours Nandigram, from where Mamata Banerjee is a candidate, saw two premeditated and mandated attacks by BJP on instructions and/or in presence of Sri Suvendu Adhikari."

The ruling Trinamool said that such attacks caused "grievous and serious injuries" to its party workers.

In a detailed narration, the party said two of its workers-Samrat  Tapadar and Gautam Pal along with their security officers and driver were attacked on Wednesday late evening in Boyal by a "group of 150 armed goons of BJP".

Tapadar and another party leader Debjit Banerjee received multiple injuries in the attack and are being treated at Nandigram hospital, the TMC claimed.

In another incident at Sonachura area, while BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari was campaigning on Thursday afternoon, "his men suddenly attacked TMC workers standing with party flags without any provocation", the Trinamool said in its complaint letter to EC.

"Due to such attack, Khokhon Shit (AITYC Youth President, Anchal) suffered heavy injury on his face and his head," the TMC letter said.

The party also attached images of the injured workers as well as their medical examination report from hospitals.

According to reports, the clash erupted between the activists of the two rival parties while Nandigram's BJP candidate, Suvendu Adhikari, and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan were holding a door-to-door election campaign.

Suvendu Adhikari was also shown black flags during the skirmish.

Later, local police along with Central forces rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control.

Reports said some BJP activists were injured too during the clashes in poll-bound Bengal.

Reacting on the matter, Dharmendra Pradhan said, "Suvendu Adhikari's poll campaign was attacked in Sonachura in front of me. Mamata Banerjee and her Trinamool Congress should fight the election in a democratic way."

"I would appeal to the Election Commission to deploy Central forces here," he added.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Trinamool Congress party wrote to the Election Commission to delete Suvendu Adhikar's name from the electoral roll in Nandigram as he filed false residence details.

In the letter to EC, the TMC had claimed that Adhikari's nomination papers to contest the Bengal polls from Nandigram were also illegal because of the false details. They had urged the EC to initiate legal action against Adhikari and that his nomination papers should be struck down too.

The former TMC leader is challenging Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram on a BJP ticket in the approaching Bengal election.

Bengal will vote in eight rounds starting March 27 and the results will be declared on May 2.
