Train service resumes after day-long suspension in Kashmir

Srinagar, Mar 9 (UNI) Train service resumed on Saturday after remaining suspended on Friday for security reasons in Kashmir valley, where separatist had called for a strike in protest against the detention of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik under Public Safety Act (PSA) and banning of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI).

''All trains will chug on schedule on Badgam-Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund in south Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu region,'' a railway official said.

Similarly, he said all trains will run on Srinagar-Badgam in central Kashmir to Baramulla in north Kashmir.

Official sources said railway department received a fresh advisory from police to resume the service on Saturday and the department is acting on the advice of police.
“The service was suspended on Friday as a precautionary measure following the strike called by separatists,” they said.

They said the Railway property has suffered heavy damage during protests in the last.

However, passengers said it is ultimately they (passengers) who suffer because of suspension of the service since train service is very economical, safe and fast as compared to other modes of transport available in the valley.
''I travel everyday from Anantnag to Srinagar and back in the train. But, every time, the train service is suspended, I have to take a cab, which takes much more time… and on top of that I also have to shell out more money,” Nisar Ahmad, a passenger, told UNI.
