Top NDFB(S) leader gun down in Assam
Guwahati, Nov 17 (IBNS): A hardcore militant and platoon commander of NDFB(S) was gunned down during a gun battle with security forces in Assam's Sonitpur district along with Arunachal Pradesh border on Tuesday, officials said.
Defence spokesman based in Guwahati Suneet Newton said that, based on intelligence input, army and police jointly launched operation at Batasipur area in the northern Assam district where the hardcore militant gunned down.
The slain militant was identified as Khamkhang.
“According to intelligence input that Khamkhang was moving in the area, on which an operation was planned to nab him, but on being challenged by the troops he lobbed a grenade and opened fire and in the ensuing firefight he was neutralized,” the defence official said.
“It is a major success in the fight against terror as it was reliably learnt that Khamkhangs name was being considered by the NDFB(S) hierarchy for appointment as Commander-in-Chief of the group in place of Bidai, in order to rejuvenate the group and recover the flagging morale of the cadres which is at its lowest ebb at the moment, because of the relentless operations being conducted against them by the Security forces. It is also pertinent to mention that this individual had become a synonym for terror in the area and he was particularly known for kidnapping for ransom, extortion and terror killings. He was a key figure involved in planning and execution of the gruesome killings of innocent Adivasis by the group on December 23, 2014,” the official said.
A pistol, live ammunition and other war like stores were recovered from the slain militant.
