Medical Negligence
Toddler taken to Kerala hospital with cut lip dies after anaesthesia; case filed against doctor
A case has been registered against a doctor in Kerala following allegations that negligence while administering anaesthesia led to the death of a one-year-and-five-month-old child.
The case, filed under Section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), was registered based on a complaint lodged by K. Rajeevan, a relative of the child from Eramam, The Hindu reported.
The complainant alleged that negligence by the doctor, identified as Dr Anjali Poduval of Baby Memorial Hospital in Payyannur, Kannur, while administering anaesthesia resulted in the child suffering severe brain damage.
Devansh Shaurya, the only child of T. Suraj and Vijisha, suffered a cut on his lip after falling while playing outside his home on July 5. He was initially taken to a primary health centre in Mathamangalam, where he received first aid.
The child was later taken to Baby Memorial Hospital in Payyannur, where his wound was stitched under anaesthesia. He allegedly lost consciousness following the procedure and reportedly died on Friday.
The hospital, however, denied allegations of medical negligence.
In a statement, the hospital said the child suffered an unexpected cardiac arrest immediately after the administration of anaesthesia. He was promptly placed on ventilator support before being shifted to the hospital's Kannur facility for advanced critical care, NDTV reported.
Police have begun investigating the incident.
