TMC's rebel faction to merge with NCPI, says MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar
Twenty bebel Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs are set to join the Tripura-based Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI) and extend support to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), TMC leader Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar said on Sunday, marking a significant escalation in the internal turmoil within the party.
Announcing the move, Dastidar—once considered a close confidante of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee—told reporters, “We are going to merge with the Nationalist Citizens Party and support the NDA.”
She further stated that two-thirds of TMC MPs have submitted a letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker seeking a separate seating arrangement in Parliament, indicating a formal split within the parliamentary party.
“We will now be part of the NDA and work under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” she added.
The development is expected to deepen the ongoing crisis within the TMC, which currently has 28 MPs in the Lok Sabha.
Senior TMC MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay, also once considered a close aide of Banerjee, was among the last to join the rebel group. Speaking to reporters, he said, “We have now joined the National Citizens’ Party. It is a recognised regional party.”
The latest political realignment comes amid continuing uncertainty within the TMC following the West Bengal Assembly elections, which has seen visible tensions in both its legislative and parliamentary wings.
Reports of division within the TMC’s Lok Sabha contingent surfaced even as party chief Mamata Banerjee and national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee were in Delhi attending meetings of the INDIA bloc.
The emerging developments suggest a parallel political shift within the party’s parliamentary ranks, further intensifying speculation about internal factionalism.
