TMC retains KMC, sweeps other civic bodies polls
In Kolkata, the TMC has won or established a lead in 114 wards out of 144 while the Left Front managed 15 seats.
The BJP and the Congress managed to clinch seven and five seats. Others have won three seats.
In the 91 other civic bodies in West Bengal, the TMC has clinched or have established progress in 71 seats while the Left managed six. The Congress has won five seats.
Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee won from ward number 131.
However, Deputy Mayor Farzana Alam and chairman of the outgoing board Sacchidananada Bandopadhyay were defeated in the polls.
Thanking the people of the state, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee tweeted: "We dedicate our victory to people of Bengal. I request party workers to stay away from victory rallies today in light of #earthquake tragedy."
"We will dedicate our victory to Rabindranath Tagore on 9 May through Rabi Pronaam across Bengal," she said.
TMC MP Derek O'Brien tweeted: "#BengalVerdict 92 municipalities counting on.Trinamool sweeping. BJP finishing 4th with zero...gas balloon gone phuuuush."
"#BengalVerdict @MamataOfficial & @AITCofficial went to people with a simple msg: u've seen the development we've done,bless us to continue," he said.
Another TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee tweeted: "Booooooooooom!!!! Thank you Kolkata. Thank you Bengal!!!! #TMCForKMC #TMC4Bengal."
There are 7,636 candidates who contested for 1,946 wards of the 91 municipal bodies across West Bengal on Saturday.
Polling for the 144-seat KMC was held on Apr 18.
