Three poachers killed in encounter in Kaziranga

Guwahati, January 14 (IBNS) : Three rhino poachers were killed in a gun battle with forest guards in Assam's Kaziranga National Park (KNP) in the wee hours of Wednesday, officials said.

The encounter took place at Burhapahar forest range inside the park around 3 am on Wednesday.

Following a tip-off, forest guards launched operation in the area where a poacher group entered in the national park from adjacent Karbi hills.

"When forest guards reached the area where the poacher group was hiding they were fired upon. They forced us to exchange bullets in which a poacher was killed and two others had managed to flee, " a top forest official of KNP said.

Forest guards chased the fleeing poacher duo and shot them dead after a fierce gun battle for 25 minutes.

Forest guards recovered two 303 rifles with fitted silencer and one rounds of ammunition, one 9 mm pistol with nine rounds of ammunition in possession from the slain poachers.

Poachers killed three one horned rhinos in Kaziranga in this year so far.

Assam lost 36 rhinos which were poached, including 27 in Kaziranga in last year.
