Thousands of farmers to reach Delhi to support protesting wrestlers

New Delhi: Thousands of farmers under the banner of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) will reach Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on May 7 to support the wrestlers sitting on a dharna demanding action against Wrestling Federation of India chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Singh over alleged sexual harassment, media reports said.

SKM, which is a coalition of over forty Indian farmers' unions, has also announced to hold nationwide agitation and protest programmes in support of female wrestlers.

The announcement was made a day before the Maha Panchayat, called by Khap organisations, is scheduled to take place at Jantar Mantar in Delhi to extend support to the wrestlers.

The farmers union has demanded immediate action against Brij Bhushan Singh, who is facing two FIRs, including one lodged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

According to reports, from Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Western Uttar Pradesh, along with hundreds of farmers, will visit the Jantar Mantar in a show of solidarity with the women wrestlers.

The leaders of SKM (Samyukta Kisan Morcha) are set to lead a delegation to various authorities, including the Delhi Police Commissioner, Union sports minister, and Union home minister, demanding the arrest of Brij Bhushan Singh.

The farmer’s union has announced a pan-India agitation from May 11 to May 18, which will take place in state capitals and district headquarters across the country.

The SKM has also criticized the Delhi Police for their alleged lack of sensitivity and condemned the denial of basic civil rights to the protesting wrestlers.

India's renowned wrestlers, including Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and several other prominent grapplers, have staging a sit-in protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar since April.

The wrestlers have accused Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexual harassment and intimidation, and they continue their protest demanding action against him.

The wrestlers are also eating, sleeping, and conducting their training sessions at the protest site.

However, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has denied all allegations and alleged that the protest is part of a conspiracy to malign his image.
