The father of one of the accused Shafiq Ballere in BJP worker Praveen Nettaru's murder case has said that the victim was friends with his son and visited their house, said media reports.

Ibrahim said that he worked in Praveen's broiler shop and his son Shafiq and Praveen also indulged in conversation there.

Ibrahim told India Today that he was not aware of why Praveen was murdered, adding that both Shafiq and Zakir were not the type to inflict violence on others, adding that they were being targetted just because they were Muslims.

Mangalore police on Thursday arrested Shafiq Ballere and Zaqir Savanuru in connection with the BJP Yuva Morcha leader Praveen Nettaru's murder case.

He was hacked to death with lethal weapons by unidentified people in front of his broiler shop when he was heading home after closing his shop on Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, Shafiq's wife revealed that her husband was a member of the Popular Front of India (PFI) and used to take up social programmes for the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), stated the India Today report.

On Thursday, police also detained 21 suspects in the case and said that all of them are members of PFI and SDPI, the report added.

After the killing, tension gripped the Dakshina Kannada district and instances of stone-pelting and police lathicharge were reported.

Section 144 was imposed in the Puttur area and security forces were deployed in Bellare village of the Dakshina Kannada district.

The BJP and Sangh Parivar supporters staged massive protests and slammed Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai for not doing enough to protect the lives of Hindu workers.

The Karnata Chief Minister said if need arises, he would follow the 'Yogi Adityanath model' in the state to curb communal forces.
