Tamil Nadu leaders pay rich tributes to Periyar

Chennai, Sep 17 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and leaders of various political parties on Tuesday paid rich tributes to Rationalist leader Periyar E V Ramasamy on the occasion of his 141st birth anniversary.

Mr Palaniswami, accompanied by Mr Panneerselvam and his Cabinet colleagues garlanded his statue paid floral tributes to a decorated portrait of Periyar on the arterial Anna Salai to mark the occasion.

Leaders of various political parties, including DMK President M K Stalin, MDMK General Secretary Vaiko, VCK Founder and Lok Sabha member Thol Thirumavalavan, Dravidar Kazhagam President K Veeramani, leaders of left parties and PMK Founder Dr S Ramadoss also paid floral tributes to Periyar on the occasion.

Erode Venkatappa Ramasamy (17 Sept 1879 – 24 Dec 1973), commonly known as Periyar, also referred to as Thanthai Periyar, was a social activist, and politician who started the Self-Respect Movement and Dravidar Kazhagam. He is known as the 'Father of Dravidian Movement'.

He has done exemplary works against Brahminical dominance, caste prevalence and women oppression in Tamil Nadu.
