Tirunelveli(Tamil Nadu)/UNI: Four persons were trapped, after a massive boulder fell over heavy vehicles in a deep quarry at Adaimithipankulam village in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu on Saturday midnight.

Police said the mishap occurred when the vehicles including two tipper lorries and quarry excavators were engaged in transporting stones at 300-feet below ground level.

The vehicles were trapped under the boulder at the bottom of the quarry.

The Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services personnel rushed to the site and rescued two persons with ropes, on Sunday morning while the rescue operation is on to rescue the remaining trapped people.

Tirunelveli District Collector V.Vishnu and Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Tirunelveli range Pravesh Kumar rushed to the site and were inspecting the rescue operation.

The district administration has summoned the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) from Arakkonam to intensify the rescue operation. It also sought a report from Mines and Geology department experts on the incident.

The locals accused that the quarrying was being carried out by a private firm without following the rules and regulations.
