Srinagar, Apr 25 (IBNS): Suspected militants shot dead a senior Congress leader while two police personnel were injured  in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, the police said on Wednesday.

Official said one of the injured was Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Patel.

Patel joined the Congress party  this year before serving Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for several years as a General Secretary South Kashmir .

The official said both the injured policemen are being treated at the hospital.

Soon after the attack, security forces have cordoned off the area and a search has been launched to nab the attackers.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti condemned the attack and called the it "cowardly".

"Heartfelt condolences to the family of senior Congress leader, G. N. Patel who was killed by militants today in Rajpora. Such cowardly acts achieve nothing but leave one more family devastated," Mehbooba wrote on twitter.
