Supreme Court to hear Sabarimala verdict review petitions from Wednesday

New Delhi, Jan 31 (IBNS): The Supreme Court will begin to hear 48 review petitions challenging the top court verdict, which allowed entry of menstruating women into Kerala's Sabarimala Temple, from Wednesday, media reports said.

Headed by Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi, a five-judge bench will hear the petitions from next week.

Women of menstrual age, aged between 10 and 50, were earlier banned from entering the temple for centuries as a part of the religious practice and devotion towards Lord Ayyappa.

The Supreme Court passed the judgement on Sept 28 in favour of women with a 4:1 ratio. The only judge who had dissented, interestingly a woman, was Indu Malhotra.

Following the top court's verdict, the shrine opened on Oct 18 for the first time allowing women of the barred age group to enter the temple. However, several men and women had protested outside the temple, trying to prevent the entry of women in the shrine.

Despite resistances, a few women managed to reach the sanctum sanctorum of the shrine.
