New Delhi/IBNS: The Supreme Court Wednesday ordered the release of AG Perarivalan, one of the convicts in the case pertaining to the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, after 31 years, media reports said.

"State cabinet had taken its decision based on relevant considerations. In exercise of Article 142, it is appropriate to release the convict," Supreme Court judges, led by L Nageswara Rao, said as quoted by NDTV.

The judgement could pave the way for release of six other convicts in the case.

"Truth and justice were on our side. This wouldn't have happened without the support and love of the people," Perarivalan said after the judgement.

Perarivalan, who was 19 at the time of assassination, was accused of buying two nine-volt batteries for Sivarasan, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam man, who was the mastermind of assassination.

Gandhi was assassinated by a suicide bomber during an election rally in 1991.
