Supreme Court allows Ayodhya mediation panel time till August 1 to submit report
New Delhi, July 18 (IBNS): The Supreme Court today said mediation in the Ayodhya dispute will continue till the end of the month.
Reports said the apex court gave the mediation panel time till August 1 to submit its report.
On July 11, a five-judge Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi had sought a report on the progress of mediation and said it could start day-to-day hearings from July 25 if there was no merit in continuing mediation.
Last year, the apex court had set up a panel headed by former SC judge F.M. Kalifulla to hold consultations and seek a solution to the dispute. Spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and advocate Sriram Panchu were the two other members of the panel.
What is the dispute?
The dispute involves the site in Ayodhya where the Babri Masjid stood before it was demolished by Hindu activists in 1992 claiming it was built on the ruins of a temple marking the birthplace of Lord Ram.
Around 2,000 people died across the country in riots following the demolition.
In 2010, Allahabad High Court judgment ordered that the 2.77-acre plot be partitioned equally among the Sunni Waqf Board, the Nirmohi Akhara and Ram Lalla (infant Ram). Fourteen appeals have been filed in the Supreme Court against the high court order.
