Kolkata, Sept 22 (IBNS): Protesting against the deaths of two students in an alleged police firing during a clash between police force and pupils in an Islampur school in West Bengal, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called for a statewide shut down on Sept 26.

During a mass meeting in Buniadpur in neighbouring South Dinajpur district, BJP state president Dilip Ghosh announced to obseve a 12-hour general strike in Bengal on Wednesday.

WB CM Mamata Banerjee, who is in Milan currently, has directed the state administration to take adequate steps to keep situation normal on the day.

Earlier on Thursday, a school students' protest over the appointment of Urdu language teachers turned violent.

Two students were shot dead and another youth sustained gunshot wound after police allegedly fired bullets aiming at demonstrating students.

North Dinajpur SP Sumit Kumar claimed that police did not fire a single round of bullets during the clash.

An investigation is currently underway.

West Bengal education minister, Partha Chatterjee, had earlier said that a probe had been initiated into the matter.

"Local police are investigating the matter and if anyone is found guilty, strict action will be taken against him/her," Partha Chatterjee said.
